Pushing through the Assassin's Creed Shadows campaign will be reflected in the changing of the seasons, mixing up gameplay and the overall Japanese setting, a new deep dive into the open world game reveals. Via IGN, it's confirmed the single player story will move from spring and summer and into autumn and winter as you progress the plot. Doing so changes how you interact with the world and what it looks like.

The online outlet says: "The open world progresses through spring, summer, autumn, and winter, with each new period bringing its own weather conditions and terrain shifts. While this helps lend a sense of realism to the land – dynamic winds will procedurally blow swirls of pollen in the spring and pull leaves from branches in the fall – each season can have a dramatic impact on gameplay." One example given is that in the summer season, you can hide underwater to avoid enemies. However, in the winter, lakes and rivers are frozen over, eliminating the stealth opportunity completely.

Then, in the spring and summer, the grass grows tall enough for you to hide and move about in without being seen. The knock-on effect there, though, is guards will sweep those areas with their weapons in search of you. When the temperature drops in the winter, enemies will huddle together around fires to stay warm. Storms and howling winds will also affect the enemy's ability to detect you.

It is said the map will be similar in size to that of Assassin's Creed Origins, and you might play side quests in different seasons to your friends. Do you like the sound of this season-changing gameplay? Put your thoughts in the comments below.

About Liam Croft

Seasons in Assassin's Creed Shadows Change Gameplay, Setting (5)

Liam grew up with a PlayStation controller in his hands and a love for Metal Gear Solid. Nowadays, he can be found playing the latest and greatest PS5 games as well as supporting Derby County. That last detail is his downfall.

Sounds cool doubt I’ll bother though too many great games already out that I still haven’t tried. I did enjoy odyssey a lot but it was very samey. Show me a black flag remake however and il drop everything 😁

I can't get over the fact that the disc will require you to connect to Ubi server in order to install it. And all of that just to sell their play 3 day early pass. Pure greed. This is also the first AC game to do that

@Zuljaras so much for physical games huh? 😂

@nomither6 It seems that way with AAA releases. The future is grim for physical collection gamers but still there are so many games with good physical releases that could give you playtime of couple of lifetimes

I liked this mechanic in 3, gave the map a bit more variety.

I know it’s easy to be cynical about Ubisoft games, but this looks like it’ll be ambitious in the right way so far. This and the leaked info about Hexe (and the fact that Valhalla and Mirage were relatively solid) leaves me feeling optimistic about this one.

@Zuljaras Wait…seriously?

Damn, that is intensely scummy. One more reason to just avoid Ubisoft altogether.

Thanks for saving me $70!

Agreed I always wanted it to come back at some point. It's cool to see it back and more fleshed out here too.

Very glad to hear the map is similar to Origins. Took me right at 50 hours to platinum it and I think that's the sweet spot. Looking forward to seeing gameplay next month

The seasons idea sounds awesome and like a big upgrade to what AC3 done with it. Origins map size sounds great, its very big but not Odyssey big.

While I’m looking forward to it the description of the seasons changing and wind blowing sound exactly like this game is going to be the spiritual successor to Ghost of Tsushima.. how original lol

I'm a sucker for cool weather dynamic in games that do change the gameplay.

@Zuljaras There's another '81 crash coming. You can pick up their AAAAA titles at your local valuebin in a few years.

Always wanted a great Assassins Creed game set in Japan. Thought it would be a great setting for parkour & stealth gameplay.

The cutscenes didn’t really indicate any of that? Is this going to be another open world Golden Axe hack n slash game with RPG elements? Or a proper evolution of what the original Assassins Creed game used to be?

Would really like to have seen how the parkour mechanics could’ve evolved for current gen but they just became an after thought in the last few games.

Considering it needs to be online to play it it's a no from me I'll just stick to ghost of tushima

@pukana considering its Assassin's Creed you didn't see much stealth in the trailer either

This sounds pretty awesome! And I’m fine with the map size as well. My concern is how dynamic the gameplay will actually be. One thing that has turned me off from AC games is how you can highlight enemies and they will glow red — this essentially takes away the impact of stealth oriented gameplay.

@Dampsponge yeah that’s what I mentioned in my comment.
Not many shadows & the Assassinations looked more like open fights. Not what you’d really expect from a trained Assassin.

I guess like how all current Ubisoft Tom Clancy titles have nothing but Tom Clancy in name, we have to accept the Assassins Creed games have nothing to do with Assassins Creed but the name…and microtransactions.

@Dampsponge Is that not a bit ironic given you need to connect to a PSN account to even play the single player stuff in GoT on PC.

Sounds great so far. Really glad to hear the map size is similar to Origins. That's a perfect size imo.
